LinkedIn up to #5 from #9 in total monthly visits of popular Social Network sites
(Credit: Compete.com)Earlier today we got a nice update on the most popular social network sites from Compete.com for the month of January. The results are shown in the table, but the big thing in my book is the rise of LinkedIn in comparison to other sites.
While Facebook and MySpace continue to fight it out for top ranking the addition of Twitter is an acknowledgment of it’s meteoric rise as it is adopted by the mainstream.
According to Compete’s Andy Kazeniac: “These are numbers stemming entirely from Web browser data in the U.S. That means that you won’t be pulling in any international numbers, where most of Facebook’s users are now, or data from widgets or third-party applications, which are how many avid Twitter users access the service. That means that it’s likely that Twitter’s reach is bigger than the numbers indicate.”

I expect LinkedIn to move up as more professionals hear about it. At a dinner party this week there was a discussion of facebook vs myspace. I threw in LinkedIn and most of them had never heard of it. The conclusion was drawn that LinkedIn is a more professional type of social network than the other two. Most of the group felt that Facebook and myspace were more about the fun, ridiculous and fyi info.
